While I wouldn't consider Masked Heart a thriller, the story does get quite dark at times. In the beginning, I was a bit confused about the direction of the story, but the compelling prologue had my interest piqued enough to push forward. Then came the first twist and I had to know more. The tale is more mystery than thriller, and the romance is a slow build, but considering the setting, it makes sense that these characters would be hesitant to express themselves. The scenes throughout the book do tend to jump around a bit, leaving me with the feeling that I was missing something, and at times there is little to determine whose point of view each scene is in. Once I started getting a feel for each character's personality, the story did improve for me. Things do come together and I have to say that I wasn't expecting that ending.
